Build · Phase 3: 5K Distance-Based Plan (9 Weeks)
Overview: Transitioning to the 5K Distance
In this final phase, we’ll shift from time-based training to focusing on distance. Over the next 9 weeks, we’ll build up to completing a full 5K. Whether you choose to walk, walk-run, or run continuously, this phase is designed to help you reach the finish line with confidence and enjoyment.
Why the Distance-Based Approach?
By now, you’ve developed the habit of regular movement and built up to 30 minutes of activity. Phase 3 will add a new challenge—covering a specific distance, which is the equivalent of a 5K (3.1 miles). This approach helps prepare your body and mind for the eventual goal of completing the 5K, focusing on endurance, pacing, and consistency rather than speed.
What to Expect in This Phase
Over the next 9 weeks, we’ll gradually increase the distance you cover in each session. You’ll have a mix of walking, walk-run, and running options, giving you the flexibility to choose based on your progress, comfort, and goals. Each week’s lesson will provide:
- Distance Goals: Clear targets for how far you’ll aim to walk/run that week.
- Guidance: Tips for pacing, form, and adjusting your sessions based on how you feel.
- Motivation: Strategies to keep you motivated as the distance increases.
How to Approach Phase 3
- Adapt Each Session: You may find some weeks easier or more challenging than others. It’s okay to repeat a week or modify a session to suit your needs. The goal is steady progress, not perfection.
- Listen to Your Body: As the distance increases, it’s important to pay attention to how your body feels. Take rest days, stretch, and hydrate properly to reduce the risk of injury.
- Visualise Your Success: Imagine yourself completing the 5K, whether that’s by walking, walk-running, or running continuously. Use this mental picture to fuel your motivation and keep moving forward.
By the end of this phase, you’ll be ready to complete a full 5K, feeling strong, accomplished, and proud of the journey you’ve taken. Remember, it’s not just about crossing the finish line; it’s about embracing the progress you’ve made along the way.
Let’s get started!
