Week 3 - Introducing Variety
This lesson includes a video. Loading it connects to YouTube.
Welcome to Week 3! You’re doing an incredible job establishing a consistent walking habit. By now, you’ve likely noticed that your body is adapting to the routine, and you may even feel a bit more energised after your walks. This week, we’re going to add some variety to keep things interesting and further enhance your endurance.
Your Goal for This Week
The focus for Week 3 is to maintain your walking sessions at 20-25 minutes but with a new twist: we’ll be experimenting with different routes and paces. Adding variety will not only keep you engaged, but it will also challenge your body in new ways, helping you build strength and stamina.
The Plan
Here’s what your week might look like:
- Day 1: 20-25 minute walk at your usual comfortable pace, but try a new route if you can—perhaps a nearby park, different neighbourhood, or a trail. Changing your scenery can make your walks feel fresh and exciting.
- Day 2: Rest or light movement day. Incorporate gentle stretching or yoga to keep your muscles loose and relaxed.
- Day 3: 20-25 minute walk with a twist—incorporate 2-3 short bursts of brisk walking. For example, walk briskly for 1 minute, then return to your regular pace for 4 minutes. This helps introduce a bit of intensity while keeping things manageable.
- Day 4: Another rest or active recovery day. Focus on mobility exercises or gentle movement that feels good for your body.
- Day 5: 20-25 minute walk. You can choose to explore a new route or, if you’re feeling confident, incorporate another brisk walking segment or try walking on a gentle incline (like a hill or an incline on a treadmill) for a few minutes.
The goal this week is to keep things interesting, build stamina, and challenge yourself in new ways, all while maintaining the consistency you’ve built so far.
Tips for Week 3 Success
- Stay Mindful: As you try different routes or intensify your pace briefly, pay attention to how your body feels. Notice your posture—are your shoulders relaxed, and are you standing tall? Check in with your breath, making sure you can still breathe comfortably.
- Play with Pace, Not Pressure: The brief bursts of brisk walking are meant to add variety, not intensity. Think of them as mini-challenges, and don’t worry about speed. It’s about feeling a little bit of a push, but not too much. If it feels too hard, shorten the bursts or skip them altogether.
- Enjoy the Scenery: Changing your walking environment can boost your mood and make walks more enjoyable. Explore different areas if you can; it’s a great way to find new favourite spots while getting your steps in.
Reflecting on Your Progress
This is a good time to look back at where you started just two weeks ago. You’ve already built up your walking time, and now you’re adding variety and exploring new ways to challenge yourself. These are all signs of progress! It’s not about big leaps but steady, small steps that build a strong habit. Remember to log your sessions and note how you felt—celebrate any small victories you notice!
Looking Ahead
By the end of Week 3, you’ll have experienced new routes, experimented with different paces, and taken steps toward building greater endurance. Next week, we’ll continue to gradually increase your time on your feet and focus on making your walking sessions feel even more natural and comfortable.
Keep up the great work this week, and remember: variety isn’t about pushing hard; it’s about keeping things fun and engaging. Each walk is an opportunity to explore and grow. You’re making wonderful progress—keep going, and I’ll see you in Week 4!
