Week 6: Settling Into Longer Runs
Welcome to Week 6.
You’re officially doing something that once might have felt impossible. Five-minute running intervals. That matters.
This week is less about pushing harder and more about settling in. You’re teaching your body and mind that running for longer stretches is safe, manageable, and something you can return to again and again.
Your Goal for This Week
The focus for Week 6 is comfort with longer running intervals.
You’ll be running for 5 minutes at a time, followed by 2 minutes of walking, repeated three times. The aim is not to rush through these runs, but to find a steady rhythm that feels sustainable across the whole session.
If Week 5 felt challenging, that’s completely normal. Week 6 is where things often start to feel more familiar.
How This Week Should Feel
Expect this week to feel challenging but achievable.
The run intervals are longer, so pacing matters more than ever. You should still be able to speak a few words while running. If you can’t, that’s your cue to slow things down.
This is not the week to chase speed. It’s the week to build trust.
Tips for Week 6 Success
Slow Is Smart
A slightly slower pace now will help you finish each interval feeling in control. Think relaxed, not rushed.
Break It Down Mentally
Five minutes can feel long if you stare at the clock. Instead, split it up in your head.
First minute: settle in.
Middle minutes: find rhythm.
Last minute: stay calm and steady.
Use the Walk Break Well
The walking intervals are part of the training, not a failure. Let your breathing settle, shake out your arms, and reset for the next run.
Listening to Your Body
Some fatigue is normal as the intervals get longer. Sharp pain or lingering discomfort is not.
If you need to:
- Reduce the number of intervals
- Add an extra minute of walking
- Repeat Week 5 again
That’s not falling behind. That’s training wisely.
Looking Ahead
By the end of this week, you’ll have proven to yourself that five-minute runs are something you can handle. That confidence is important, because next week we’ll extend things just a little further.
For now, focus on consistency, calm pacing, and showing up.
You’re doing really well. Keep going!
