Week 1: Starting Walk-Run Intervals
This lesson includes a video. Loading it connects to YouTube.
This week is all about introducing the concept of walk-run intervals, helping your body adapt gradually, and setting the foundation for the weeks ahead.
Overview of Week 1:
- Total Sessions: Aim for 3-4 sessions this week.
- Session Duration: Each session will be around 20-25 minutes, including a warm-up and cool-down.
- Interval Structure: You’ll alternate between 1 minute of running and 4 minutes of walking. We’ll repeat this cycle 2-3 times per session.
Your Plan:
- Warm-Up (5 Minutes): Start with a brisk walk to get your heart rate up and prepare your muscles. You can add dynamic stretches like leg swings or gentle lunges.
- Intervals (10-15 Minutes): - Run for 1 minute at a comfortable pace. This is not a sprint—think of it as a jog or gentle run. You should be able to talk comfortably during this time. - Walk for 4 minutes to recover. Use this time to catch your breath, relax, and prepare for the next run interval. - Repeat this cycle 2-3 times, depending on your energy levels and how your body feels.
- Cool-Down (5 Minutes): Finish your session with a gentle walk. This will gradually bring your heart rate down and help prevent stiffness. Include a few stretches for your calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps to wrap up.
Key Tips for Week 1:
- Focus on Form: During your run intervals, keep your posture upright and your shoulders relaxed. Land softly with each step and aim for short, quick strides rather than long, heavy ones.
- Listen to Your Body: This is your first week of running, so it’s natural for your body to feel a bit different. Mild muscle soreness is normal, but if you feel any sharp pain or discomfort, slow down or switch back to walking for a session.
- Find Your Rhythm: The 1-minute run interval should feel manageable and not too intense. If it feels challenging, adjust your pace or reduce the number of intervals. It’s all about finding what works for you.
Goal for Week 1: Your goal this week is to complete the sessions using the walk-run intervals without focusing on speed or distance. The emphasis is on consistency—getting your body used to the rhythm of alternating between walking and running. Celebrate each session you complete, as you’re laying the groundwork for the rest of this phase!
Looking Ahead: Next week, we’ll maintain the same interval structure but slightly increase the number of repetitions. Take this week to get comfortable with the routine and listen to your body as you ease into running.
Remember, you’re making progress with every step. Enjoy the process, and let’s build this habit together!
