Overcoming Fear And Self-Doubt

For many people, the hardest part of starting a running journey is not physical.

It is mental.

It is not the running itself that stops them.

It is the thoughts that happen before they even begin.

Thoughts like:

“What if I can’t do it?”

“What if people judge me?”

“What if I look silly?”

“What if I fail again?”

“What if I start and give up like before?”

These thoughts can be incredibly powerful.

Because fear and self-doubt have a way of making even small steps feel much bigger than they really are.

They convince you that:

  • you are not ready
  • you are not capable
  • you are not fit enough
  • you do not belong
  • or that now simply is not the right time

And if you listen to those thoughts for long enough, you can spend months, even years, stuck in the same place.

Wanting to begin…

But never quite feeling confident enough to take the first step.

If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something important:

Fear and self-doubt are normal.

They do not mean something is wrong with you.

They do not mean you are weak.

They do not mean you are not capable.

They simply mean you are doing something that matters to you.

Most people feel fear when they step outside their comfort zone.

Most people feel self-doubt when trying something new.

Most people worry what others think far more than they admit.

So the goal is not to eliminate fear completely.

The goal is to stop letting fear make your decisions for you.

Because confidence rarely comes before action.

Most people think confidence works like this:

First I become confident…

**Then** I take action.

But in reality it usually works the other way around:

First you take action… then confidence grows afterwards.

Confidence is built by doing.

By trying.

By proving to yourself that you can.

By showing up even when you feel unsure.

That means waiting until you feel fully confident before starting often leads nowhere.

Because confidence tends to arrive after the first few steps, not before them.

So if fear or self-doubt are showing up for you right now, the answer is not to wait for them to disappear.

The answer is to move forward gently anyway.

That might mean:

  • starting smaller than feels impressive
  • choosing quieter places to begin
  • walking before running
  • reminding yourself that nobody else is judging you as much as you think
  • focusing on your own journey, not everyone else’s

And most importantly:

It means accepting that feeling nervous is part of the process.

You do not need to be fearless.

You just need to be brave enough to take the next step despite the fear.

Because every time you do that…

You prove something to yourself.

You prove:

“I can do hard things.”

“I can keep going even when I doubt myself.”

“I can become someone who follows through.”

And those little moments build confidence over time.

So if you are struggling with fear right now, remember this:

You do not need to believe in yourself perfectly before you begin.

You only need enough belief to take the next small step.

Then the next one.

Then the next.

And, over time, those small brave steps begin to change how you see yourself.

That is how confidence is built.

Not by waiting.

But by doing.

Take A Moment To Reflect

What fears or doubts tend to show up when you think about starting or progressing?

Be honest with yourself.

Is it fear of judgement?

Fear of failure?

Fear of looking silly?

Fear of not sticking with it?

Fear that you will let yourself down again?

Which fear feels strongest for you right now?

Your Next Small Step

Choose one fear that has been holding you back and decide on one small way to challenge it.

That might mean:

  • going for a short walk or run despite feeling self-conscious
  • starting somewhere quieter where you feel more comfortable
  • reminding yourself that confidence comes after action, not before
  • doing something small even though you do not feel fully ready

Take one small brave step instead of waiting to feel fearless.

Remember

Confidence is not built by waiting until you feel ready.

It is built by taking action before you do.
