As you prepare to move into the next stage of your journey, it helps to have something to aim for.

A sense of direction.

A reason to keep showing up.

A marker on the horizon that gives your effort purpose.

That is where goals can be incredibly helpful.

But there is one important catch:

Your first goal needs to be realistic.

One of the most common mistakes people make when starting out is setting goals based on excitement rather than reality.

They aim too high, too soon.

They decide things like:

“I’m going to run 5K straight away.”

“I’m going to train every day.”

“I’ll be smashing parkrun in no time.”

“I want huge progress quickly.”

Now there is nothing wrong with ambition.

But when your goals are too far ahead of your current reality, they can quickly become discouraging.

Because instead of motivating you, they start to create pressure.

You begin to feel:

• behind
• frustrated
• like you are failing
• like progress is too slow

And sometimes people quit not because they are not progressing… but because their expectations were unrealistic from the start.

That is why your first goal should NOT be:

The most exciting goal possible.

It should be:

The most HELPFUL goal possible.

And the most helpful early goals are usually process-focused, not outcome-focused.

That means instead of aiming for:

• speed
• distance
• big milestones

you focus on goals like:

• completing your first week of consistency
• building a routine
• showing up three times this week
• finishing your first walk-run session
• simply sticking with the process

Because those are goals you can influence directly.

And when you achieve those smaller goals:

• confidence grows
• momentum builds
• belief increases
• bigger goals begin to feel possible

Think of your first goal as:

A stepping stone, not a finish line.

It should challenge you just enough to create momentum…

Without overwhelming you.

Because the purpose of your first goal is not to prove anything.

It is to help you build confidence through progress.

And remember:

The most powerful early win is not:

“I achieved something massive.”

It is:

“I followed through on what I said I would do.”

That is how self-belief is built.

So as you think about your next step, resist the urge to chase the biggest or boldest goal.

Instead ask yourself:

“What goal feels realistic, meaningful, and achievable from where I am right now?”

Start there.

Build momentum there.

And let your bigger goals come later.

Take A Moment To Reflect

Think about the goals you naturally tend to set for yourself.

Do you often aim very high very quickly?

Do you put pressure on yourself to achieve big things early?

How has that worked out for you in the past?

Your Next Small Step

Choose one realistic short-term goal for the next stage of your journey.

Make it:

• achievable
• specific
• manageable
• based on consistency, not perfection

Focus on building momentum, not impressing anyone.

Remember

Your first goal should build confidence, not pressure.
