Getting Ready To Start

As people get closer to actually beginning, it is surprisingly common for overthinking to start creeping in.

Suddenly the mind starts asking questions like:

“Do I have the right shoes?”

“Do I need special gear first?”

“What if I am not prepared enough?”

“What if I start before I am ready?”

And while those thoughts may seem practical on the surface, they often become another way of delaying action.

Because sometimes what looks like preparation is really just procrastination in disguise.

Now to be clear, a little preparation is helpful.

But one of the biggest traps beginners fall into is convincing themselves they need everything perfectly sorted before they can begin.

The truth is:

You do not need to overcomplicate getting started.

You do not need:

  • expensive gear
  • the perfect outfit
  • the latest watch
  • advanced knowledge
  • a flawless setup

You simply need enough to begin comfortably and safely.

For most people, that means:

  • comfortable clothes you can move in
  • basic supportive shoes
  • a simple place to walk or run
  • and a realistic plan for when you will do it

That is enough.

The goal at this stage is not optimisation.

It is accessibility.

You want starting to feel easy.

Simple.

Low-friction.

Because the more complicated you make the process, the easier it becomes to talk yourself out of it.

So rather than obsessing over creating the perfect setup, focus on removing barriers.

Ask yourself:

“What would make it easier for me to start consistently?”

That might mean:

  • setting your clothes out the night before
  • choosing a nearby route so travel is not a barrier
  • picking a time of day that fits naturally into your schedule
  • starting somewhere quiet if confidence is a concern
  • keeping expectations small and manageable

Remember:

You are not preparing for a major event.

You are preparing to begin building a habit.

That means simplicity is your friend.

The easier it is to get started, the more likely you are to keep doing it.

And one final thing:

Do not wait until you feel completely ready.

Because the truth is, most people never feel fully ready.

There will always be:

  • another excuse
  • another doubt
  • another thing you think you need first

At some point, preparation has to become action.

And often the best way to feel ready…

Is simply to begin.

Take A Moment To Reflect

Have you been delaying your start because you feel like you need more preparation first?

Be honest with yourself.

Are there practical concerns you genuinely need to solve… or have you perhaps been overthinking things as a way of avoiding the discomfort of beginning?

Your Next Small Step

Choose one simple thing you can do to make starting easier.

That might be:

  • laying out your clothes tonight
  • deciding when your first session will be
  • choosing your route/location
  • preparing your shoes/gear
  • simplifying your plan

Focus on removing friction, not creating perfection.

Remember

You do not need everything perfectly in place to begin.

You just need enough to take the first step.
