The next starting point we need to talk about is Starting Again.

This is for people who have been here before.

Maybe you have run in the past.

Maybe you were fitter once.

Maybe exercise used to be part of your life, but somewhere along the way things changed.

Life got busy.

Motivation faded.

Injury happened.

Illness happened.

Burnout happened.

Or maybe you simply drifted away from it over time.

Whatever the reason, you are now standing in a place that can feel strangely frustrating.

Because unlike someone starting completely fresh, you know what it felt like before.

You know what you used to be capable of.

And that can create one of the hardest mental battles in this whole journey:

The temptation to compare yourself to your former self.

You might catch yourself thinking things like:

“I used to be able to run this easily.”

“I can’t believe how much I’ve lost.”

“I should be further along than this.”

“Why can’t I just pick up where I left off?”

If that sounds familiar, please hear this:

Starting again is not the same as starting over.

You still have experience.

You still have lessons.

You still have understanding.

You still have the memory of what this process takes.

But your body, your life, and your circumstances may not be where they once were.

And one of the biggest mistakes people make when starting again is trying to return at the level they used to be.

They think:

“I’ve done this before, so I should be able to do that again straight away.”

But that mindset often leads to:

• frustration
• disappointment
• injury
• burnout
• giving up

Because while your memory may still remember the old you…

Your current reality may not match it.

That is why the healthiest way to approach starting again is not to think:

“How quickly can I get back to where I was?”

But instead:

“How do I rebuild properly from where I am now?”

That mindset shift changes everything.

Because it moves you from:

• ego
• impatience
• comparison

into:

• patience
• realism
• self-respect

If you are starting again, your path forward is not about proving that you still “have it.”

It is about rebuilding in a way that honours your current situation.

That may mean:

• slowing down more than your pride wants
• easing back in more gently than you expected
• accepting that progress may take time
• treating this as a new chapter, not a continuation of the old one

Because sometimes the strongest thing you can do is let go of who you were…

So you can build who you are becoming.

If this is where you find yourself, then your goal right now is simple:

Be patient with yourself.

Respect where you are today.

And rebuild one step at a time.

You are not back at zero.

You are bringing experience with you.

But this time, you have the chance to rebuild stronger, wiser, and more sustainably than before.

Take A Moment To Reflect

How often do you compare yourself to the version of you from the past?

Do you find yourself thinking about what you used to be able to do… and feeling frustrated that you are not there right now?

How might that comparison be affecting the way you approach starting again?

Your Next Small Step

Take a moment to let go of one expectation you have been placing on yourself based on your past.

It might be:

• how fast you think you should progress
• how fit you think you should still be
• how much you think you should be able to do
• how quickly you think you should “get back”

Replace that expectation with one simple commitment:

To rebuild patiently from where you are now.

Remember

You are not trying to return to who you were.

You are building from who you are today.
