Begin · Understand Your Starting Point
There Is No One Right Place To Start
One of the biggest mistakes people can make when beginning a fitness or running journey is assuming that everyone should start in the same way.
You see it all the time online.
One person says:
“Just get out there and run.”
Another says:
“Follow this couch to 5K plan.”
Someone else says:
“Do what I did.”
And while most of that advice is well meaning, it often misses one very important truth:
There is no single right place to start.
Because no two people arrive here in exactly the same situation.
Some people are starting from years of inactivity and low confidence.
Some are returning after time away, injury, illness, or setbacks.
Some are already reasonably fit and active, but have simply never focused on running before.
And if those three people all follow the exact same advice, chances are:
- one will find it too hard
- one will find it too easy
- and one will feel like it simply does not fit their needs
That is why one-size-fits-all approaches often fail.
At Runners Gateway, we believe the best starting point is not:
“Where everyone else says you should begin.”
It is:
where you actually are right now.
And that means one of the most important things you can do before moving forward is understand your own starting point honestly.
Not the version of you from five years ago.
Not the version of you that wishes you were fitter.
Not the version of you that you think you should be.
But the REAL version of you:
- where your fitness is today
- where your confidence is today
- where your energy is today
- where your life is today
Because progress becomes much easier when your plan matches your reality.
If you start too aggressively for your current situation, you are more likely to:
- burn out
- lose confidence
- get injured
- feel discouraged
- quit early
But if you start at the right level for you:
- progress feels manageable
- confidence grows steadily
- consistency becomes easier
- and momentum starts to build naturally
That is why the next few lessons in this phase are going to help you identify the type of starting point that best fits your situation.
You may find that you are:
- Starting From Scratch
- Starting Again
- or Starting From Another Fitness Background
None of these is better or worse than the others.
They are simply different places to begin.
And understanding yours will help you move forward in a way that feels realistic, sustainable, and right for you.
So as you go through the next lessons, I encourage you to be honest with yourself.
Not critical.
Not harsh.
Just honest.
Because meeting yourself where you truly are is one of the most powerful things you can do.
And once you know where you are starting from…
You can begin building from there!
Take A Moment To Reflect
Think honestly about where you are right now, not where you wish you were.
Are you truly starting from where your current fitness, energy, confidence, and circumstances are… or are you still mentally comparing yourself to where you think you should be?
What would change if you fully accepted your real starting point?
Your Next Small Step
Take a few minutes to write down an honest snapshot of your current starting point.
Consider:
- your current fitness level
- your confidence level
- your available time and energy
- any fears or concerns you have
- anything that may affect your consistency
Do not judge it.
Do not try to improve it yet.
Simply get honest about where you are today.
Because clarity creates better decisions.
Remember
The best place to start is not where you think you should be.
It is where you truly are right now.
